July 2000 Better Breathers Meeting

With a full house, another informative meeting of Better Breathers was on its way. It was a record crowd and this month, a lot would be covered. Everyone was ready.
Patsy began the meeting demonstrating the new Pulmicort Turbuhaler®. Here she uses a device that squeaks when breathing in to instruct patients on the proper method of inhaling the medication. What's so special about Pulmicort is that it is the first breath-activated dry-powder corticosteroid inhaler to be marketed in the U.S. Since there is no propellant, it is environmentally safe. There's no need to shake this one. Plus, you get 100% medication that most people cannot taste, smell or feel.

As shown here, this inhaler is placed in your mouth when taking in the medication. Each Pulmicort Turbuhaler® contains 200 doses and has a convenient counter. A red line appears when 20 doses remain. More on Pulmicort Turbuhaler®.
Next up was Rusty Jarboe of American Home Patient with the new HELiOS Oxygen System. This is a new portable liquid oxygen system allows great portability and mobility anywhere. Depending on the flow required, this unit can provide oxygen for up to 15 hours. It also has a setting for continuous flow.

Rusty also showed a couple of pulse dose systems. Each of these has the capability of providing two liters of oxygen lasting between two and two and a half hours. The pulse dose gives a puff of oxygen each time a breath is taken.
Our other special guest of the evening was Virgil Bailey. Virgil is probably the first person in Kentucky to use the HELiOS Oxygen System. He gave us Better Breathers a great opportunity to learn how this system works from the user's point of view.
