June 2000 Better Breathers Meeting

It was a fun month for all with our very special guest Wes Flener. Wes is a respiratory therapist who uses humor as a method of treating patients. He showed us just how great humor can be for patients... and for us. We had a chance to get to know Wes as he told us of his patients and how he could make them feel better with just a bit of humor.
It all began with a child and a red nose. It's amazing just how silly you can look with a clown nose. You can't help but laugh looking at them and laughing at yourself. You'd be amazed at what a little humor can do to make you feel better.
Of course, humor isn't just in the nose... although everyone looks really funny... humor can be almost anything from a funny story to a joke or to props. Yes, props.

"Everyone should have a rubber chicken", says Wes. A what? A rubber chicken. Just thinking about it makes the sides of your mouth curl upward.
And, of course, there's the hat with the propeller on top and the rubber fish. (No, this one didn't sing... but Wes has one of those, too.)
All this may sound kind of silly, but it isn't silly to Wes's patients. Taking their mind off problems for just a little while is a great relief to both patients and family.

Wes will be taking a trip to China with (the real) Patch Adams in September. The language of humor is universal, and we can be sure they will make lots of sick kids forget about their problems for a while and just be kids again.

It was a great month we Better Breathers will remember for quite a while.
