October 2000 Better Breathers Meeting

Allergies

David E. Pallares, M.D. was our guest speaker this month from Louisville Allergy & Asthma, PSC. He provided some wonderful information on different kinds of allergies and also let us know that our runny noses, sneezing and congestion may not necessarily be allergies. In fact, almost 15-20% of these symptoms may be caused by an overly sensitive nose.

Outdoors there is lots of pollen, ragweed and other allergy-causing plants, but there are big allergens indoors as well. Dust mites are the worst indoor offender. Keeping the humidity low, using hot water for cleaning, using dust mite proof covers and using air cleaners can help. Molds and pets, especially cats, can also be a problem for some people.

Pollen and Mold Season Do's and Don'ts
DO keep windows closed at night and use air conditioning.

DO minimize early morning activity when pollen is usually emitted (5:00-10:00AM)

DO keep your car windows closed when you travel.

DO stay indoors when the pollen count or humidity is high and on windy days.

DO take a vacation during the height of pollen season to a place such as the beach or the sea. DO take the medications prescribed by your allergist.

DON'T mow the lawn or be around freshly cut grass. Mowing grass stirs up pollens and molds.

DON'T rake leaves. This stirs up molds.

DON'T hang sheets or clothing out to dry. Pollens and molds may collect in these items.

DON'T grow too many indoor plants. Wet soil causes mold.

Better Breathers Support Group thanks Dr. Pallares for taking time out of his schedule to teach us more about allergies and the different things that cause them.
